What a contract extension can do: Timo Werner, released in stages, led RB Leipzig to victory against Eintracht Frankfurt. In the end, however, the Saxons must have trembled.
As the RB Leipzig Sunday (25.08.2019) before the match against Eintracht Frankfurt announced the extension of the contract of the national striker Werner, the stadium was applauded. The Saxons were also allowed to applaud after the final whistle. Leipzig beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 (1-0) and signed the second victory in the match of the second season.
Ironically, Werner (10th minute) scored the first goal for RB, Yussuf Poulsen (80th) seemed to have closed the bag. But Frankfurt's first goal, scored by Goncalo Paciencia (89), made injury time even harder to beat for Leipzig.
Hasebe: "We can play football"
"We believed it, as we did, we felt the match dominated," said Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, disappointed by the match "Sky". Leipzig had shot three times on goal, there were two balls. Frankfurt defender Makoto Hasebe said: "In the end, the result was not good, but we showed that we could play football."
Werner first released
In front of more than 40,000 spectators, Werner seemed completely detached after the seemingly endless contract failure. He withdrew the game for himself, had the midfield balls, dodged his wings, was still playable and led his team to the front. It's no coincidence that he took the lead after a shot from Poulsen's head.
Frankfurt with a good start
The 1: 0 fell from nowhere, because Frankfurt had the best start. Filip Kostic narrowly missed the goal in the sixth minute from an acute angle. Werner's management shocked Eintracht, but to such an extent that the balance of power has changed considerably.
In the 18th minute, Werner scored 2-0 at the foot. Released from the door, he did not hit the ball properly. As a result, the game was flattened, which was due to summer temperatures of 30 degrees. The sausages also put the first leg in the Europa League final at Racing Strasbourg (0: 1) in the bone.
Also after half-time, both teams acted at a pace adapted to the weather. Three minutes after the restart, Christopher Nkunku, new rookie, sent Werner again, who was completely out of goalkeeper Frank Trapp.
Exciting extra time
The match seemed decided when Poulsen – after a magnificent substitute center Emil Forsberg, SGE-Keeper Trapp – threw the ball into the net with a cover. Paciencia, however, scored an exciting seven-minute stop with his first goal just before the end of regulation time.
Dost should be running
However, the result does not change anything more, because the game stops show once again the unity that is currently lacking: namely on the infallible strikers. Overwhelmed Dejan Joveljic had long since replaced. And Ante Rebic, apathetic from Strasbourg, was not even in the team, officially because he was beaten. All hopes are therefore resting on Bas Dost, who finally arrives at the Frankfurt medical examination on Monday, said SGE Sports Director Bruno Hübner.
Leipzig opens the third day with its appearance at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday (30.08.2019) at 20.30. Frankfurt will host Strasbourg for the first time on Thursday for the return match in the Europa League playoffs and Sunday in the league at 18:00, Fortuna Dusseldorf.
