It was as predictable as a thunderclap after a flash: a week after Upper Austria's sports infrastructure solution presented by all political decision makers, Austrian athletics launched an online petition to jointly oppose plans for the stadium of the city of Linz and the Upper Austrian state.
The Arena on the Gugl, which was renovated ten years ago with a budget of about 32 million euros, is due to be handed over to LASK in July next year, as indicated. The Bundesliga football club enjoys the right of unrestricted use and will adapt the stadium with a planned investment volume of 50 million euros for its own purposes. The construction of a new stand will fall victim to the eight-track track and field track. The Gugl is now the only IAAF certified athletic establishment in Austria and certified by the International Association. If this sports facility is now demolished as expected, "besides the city of Linz, Austria also loses an important sports site for athletics and a training facility very popular with many clubs and institutions sports ". Whatever it is, this is explained in the online petition, in which the maintenance of the career in the Linz stadium is required. The action was initiated by Michaela Anzinger, the head of ATSV Linz, one of the concerned clubs who does not want to be chased out as fast by King Football. 6500 signatures were issued as a target, this bar will soon be ignored, as the signatories do not only come from Linz and surrounding areas, but from all over Germany. With the wind in the back of the petition, we want to seek discussions with responsible politicians. "We will tackle these obstacles and fight for our sports field!" Indicates the petition.
The alternative solution proposed the previous week with the adaptation of an existing system – according to insiders, the Sports Union Center in Linz in Wieningerstraße should be expanded to allow the holding of meetings of Athletics – does not seem to be an acceptable option. This cancels the state sports adviser Markus Achleitner. He announced yesterday that the current online petition is useless. Constructive discussions have already taken place between Sportland Upper Austria and the Athletics Association regarding alternatives.
A second construction site around the infrastructure solution also opens. The basketball federation is worried that Kleinmünchen's new ball sports hall is only for handball and volleyball. The fact that Linz operates a performance center and plays in the women's basketball league was apparently neglected.
